Anthems and Hymns

Anthems

Couples usually have either one, two or three anthems sung during the course of the service. The anthems are most often sung while the register is being signed.

Anthems can either be accompanied by the organ or unaccompanied (a capella). Generally speaking the choice is yours, although if the organ is a long way from the choir, we would usually advise you to choose unaccompanied anthems.

Here are a few suggestions, with links to Youtube performances of other groups singing the works.

Unaccompanied anthems

Tallis - If Ye Love Me
Schubert – Holy, Holy, Holy
Pitoni – Cantate Domino
Lutkin – The Lord Bless You and Keep You
Hilton/Farrant - Lord, For Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake
Byrd – Ave Verum
MacMillan - O Radiant Dawn
Tallis – O Lord, Give Thy Holy Spirit

Accompanied anthems

Mozart – Ave Verum
Rutter – A Gaelic Blessing
Rutter – The Lord Bless You and Keep You
Faure – Cantique de Jean Racine
Wesley - Lead Me Lord
Elgar - Ave Verum
Mozart - Dona Nobis Pacem

Hymns

There are usually either two or three hymns. Couples often like to choose something familiar that the guests are likely to recognise and join in with. Popular options include:

Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven
Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Jerusalem
Lead Us Heavenly Father Lead Us

Lord of All Hopefulness
Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer
